Introduction Vipassana Meditation Centre (Singapore) is one of the earliest Buddhist institutions to propagate and perpetuate the practice of Vipassana Meditation in Singapore. It was set up in 1993 as a non-profit organization with the Registrar of Societies. It is set up with the objective of providing opportunities and a venue for all (Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike), who are interested in studying and practising the Teachings of the Buddha, i.e. the cultivation and development of the mind that leads to the end of all suffering. Towards this end, VMC strives in the best possible way to provide the earnest Truth seeker with the theoretical aspect of the method of Vipassana Meditation (The Four Foundation of Mindfulness) that is based upon the Pali canonical texts. This is followed with clear and precise instructions for putting the theories into actual practice. From time to time, VMC organized meditation retreats, guided by learned and capable meditation teachers to provide opportunities for a more intensive mode of practice. The annual Metta retreat has been well received since we introduced it in 1998. VMC is also trying to set up a permanent centre which is conducive and comfortable for the practice of Vipassana Meditation in Singapore, as promoting the practice of Vipassana Meditation is its primary aim. Important annual events such as Vesak, Vassa entry and Kathina on the Buddhist calendar are also observed. Besides providing opportunities to accrue merits, such occasions also allow Buddhists to understand the significance of these occasions and thus enrich their appreciation and understanding of their own faith. Those devoted to the practice of giving and sharing may offer dana at the centre or during meditation retreats. They may also make donations for the publication of Dhamma materials, such as Dhamma books and Dhamma CDs, for free distribution.
